Laser Skin Resurfacing Montgomery AL

As one of the most exciting and innovative scientific achievements of the decade, Laser technology is being utilized throughout the health care community. Dr. Nizam uses a custom laser cocktail, utilizing different lasers and growth factors to treat sun-damaged skin, facial wrinkles and scars in a procedure called laser skin resurfacing.

What is a laser?

The word “laser” is an acronym, which stands for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A surgical laser, such as the CO2 or Erb:YAG, is a beam of light capable of removing unwanted tissue, such as scarred, lined, wrinkled, or otherwise imperfect skin. The laser vaporizes skin cells by emitting bursts of light that are absorbed by water in these cells. Laser light penetrates to a very precise, controlled depth, making the procedure safe and predictable, while reducing the risk of scarring or pigmentation problems. Laser skin resurfacing is performed right here in our office. The anesthesia required depends on the depth of resurfacing. This also correlates with downtime. The deeper the treatment the more downtime, but greater the results. As a result of this treatment, you are left with more natural, radiant skin obtained from your own blood.

What areas can be treated through laser resurfacing?

The laser is used to reduce tiny wrinkles, acne scars and other minor skin imperfections, especially around the mouth and eyes. It can improve sun-damaged and acne scarred skin, problems that often cause concern to both men and women. Our most common areas of request are the neck and face. The décolleté and hands can also be treated.

Benefits of Treatment

Laser resurfacing can be used as an alternative to chemical peel and dermabrasion. The benefits of using this technique are that they are more precise/controlled, have less pain, and faster recovery.

Before Surgery

Prior to surgery, Dr. Nizam will discuss your goals for facial improvement. After determining the appropriate procedure and laser/combination of lasers, we will fully describe the procedure, what results to expect and the costs. The skin is usually pre-treated prior to surgery with an intense medical grade skin care regimen to improve the healing time and result.

The Procedure

The area is cleansed. Dr. Nizam directs the laser beam toward your skin imperfections. The laser quickly and accurately vaporizes the outermost layers. Platelet rich fibrin obtained from your own blood is then applied. This is a clinically proven method of speeding healing through delivery of your own growth factors. Soothing ointment is then applied to keep the skin moist and comfortable during healing.

What can be expected?

Downtime varies widely depending on depth of resurfacing. If a superficial resurfacing is performed minimal downtime and a few days of redness can be expected. If a deep resurfacing is performed a few weeks of redness, followed by pink, much like a sunburn can be expected. The discoloration usually disappears in one to three months. Make up can be worn to cover this in 7-10 days. The goal of laser resurfacing is to enhance facial appearance. Expectations by the patient must be realistic, and results should be anticipated as improvements rather than total corrections. Results of the surgery depend on many factors such as the size, shape and location of the imperfection and the patient’s genetics, age, and general skin condition.
